At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One undated note from Emmet Hughes related to Eisenhower's letter from December 10, 1953. (see GLC09704). Expresses that according to himself and others close to the president, it was "the longest and most self-revealing letter" he had received from him.
