At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One telephoto entitled, "Chicago" dated April 6, 1968 taken by United Press International. Image consists of National Guard trucks and armed Guardsmen. Strewn across the ground on a street in Chicago are water hoses. Wire transferinformation states that nine people died, 343 people arrested and 3,000 troop members dispatched because of the civil unrest following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
