At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The Battle of San Juan Hill took place on 1 July 1898. 24th Colored Infantry Regiment

General John Pershing, who was present at San Juan, wrote of military integration, "White regiments, black regiments, regulars and Rough Riders, representing the young manhood of the North and the South, fought shoulder to shoulder, unmindful of race or color . . . and mindful of only their common duty as Americans."
