At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Brother dated Allens Grove, January 31, 1858 from A.A. Scott. Mentions the health of the family; provides details from a letter related to Joel's trade post, his farm life, and composting; gives updates on his trade post in Iowa; and his debts. Page 4 contains a note from Mary Scott addressed to "Sister." Relays wishes that they would live closer to each other.
