Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to "Father" dated Abington, December 18, 1864 from Hubbard. Pertains to wanting to start his own business in Boston. Lists different types of work he could take up including fishing, tinware, and carpentry. Page 4 starts a second letter, presumably from his wife, related to the children and reading Merry's Museum.
