At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Gerald Handy to Donna Lawyer dated March 9, 1969. In an explicit letter he writes how much he loves her and wants to marry her as soon as he can. He also apologizes for accusing her of seeing another man, he was only kidding. He also mentions that he has Kitchen Police duty the next night. He addresses the letter to Donna Handy despite their not being married.
