At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Gerald Handy to Donna Lawyer dated May 4, 1969. He writes in an explicit letter how much he loves her. He also mentions that he will help her clean out her bedroom when he is home. He hopes that she is passing her classes and graduates. He also writes that the Maple Queen contest wasn't fixed even though she didn't win it. Mentions that he was on trash duty recently. He addresses the letter to Donna Handy despite their not being married.
