Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A piece of paper with a number of signatures, including Thomas Bird, Joseph Smith, Fredirick Stein, Jeremiah Osborn, Abiel Macomben, Joseph Huler, William Broughton, Jonah Atwater,
Medad Mix, Edmund Smith, Nehemiah Higgins, and Himany Mansfield, who signed with his mark. Signatures are dated 14 January through 25 January, but without a year. A number of the men appear to have served in Lieutenant Colonel Baldwin's Connecticut Regiment during the American Revolution.
