Inscribed on free endpaper by Duane to Henry A. Wise dated February 1839. In part a defense of his refusal as Andrew Jackson's Secretary of Treasury, to remove deposits from the Bank of the United States to state banks.
Duane was appointed Secretary of the Treasury in May 1833 by Andrew Jackson but because he refused to withdraw the government's deposits from the Second Bank of the United States without the assent of Congress, Jackson dismissed him from office only four months later.
