Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Compiled and drawn by M. B. Grant, lithographed by R. H. Howell, and published by T. A. Burke of the Morning News Office. Shows eastern Virginia (mostly Manassas and vicinity) and part of Maryland. A manuscript note on the bottom by a quartermaster sergeant tells the recipient of this map that they can use it to track his movements, which will take him from Richmond to Fort Monroe and are marked, in part, in pen on the lower right hand side of the map.
