Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Damuth's letters include the following topics: Vicksburg, General Banks, black troops (of whom he approved), the presidential election of 1864 (pro-Lincoln), the Red River campaign. He also reports news from Chattanooga and Atlanta from afar.

Damuth enlisted as a sergeant on 15 August 1862 and was mustered into D company 29th Wisconsin infantry. During his service he was promoted twice, once to First Sergeant and again to Second Lieutenant on 23 March 1865. His second commission to Second Lieutenant was declined and he was mustered out on 22 June 1865.
