Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Certificate written in a secretarial hand for Bird as Lieutenant Colonel in 15th Regiment of Foot. Says he has received James Palmer and Jacob Goodenough from the 62nd Regiment of Foot. Bird died on 4 October 1777 at the Battle of Germantown.
