Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed document signed by John Avery as deputy secretary of the council. Also signed by members of the Massachusetts Bay Council, including: Artemas Ward, Caleb and Thomas Cushing, John Winthrop, Moses Gill, B. White, John Taylor, William Phillips, John Whitcomb, L. Hopkins, Daniel Davis, Jer. Powell, Jabez Fisher, E. Thayersir, and Dr. Samuel Holten. Dearing was appointed a captain in the 7th company, 1st regiment of militia for Cumberland County, commanded by Colonel Peter Noyes. Accompanied by an unidentified silhouette (see GLC01450.520.01).
