Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Longs to see her and expects to the following week. Expresses esteem for generals George Washington and Charles Lee. Of Washington, he writes: "General Washington fills his place with vast ease and dignity & dispenses happiness all around him." Of Lee: "Genl Lee will become very popular soon." Reports that he is going to visit Washington this evening.

My dearest Wife,
I write you this by our neighbor Mr. Curtis. Were I to attempt to express the anxiety I feel upon our separation I must take up a very long sheet of paper indeed - but the pleasure which I have in Idea of seeing my love in the beginning of next week and I am sorry that it cannot be before. I have no news to communicate to you but this opportunity. I intended to have written to you yesterday but was obliged by a great hurry to omit it. General Washington fills his place with vast ease and dignity & dispenses happiness around him. Genl Lee will become very popular soon. I am in [Obligd] to go to Cambridge to wait on General Washington & I promise to be there by seven o'clock & 'tis now [2] half past that time.
