Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lists types and number of guns, and amount of ammunition. Also, lists number of guns taken by General Abbott (possibly Brevet Brigadier General Henry Larcom Abbott, also spelled 'Abbot'). Docketed by Abbott from Headquarters of Siege Artillery.

In the collection of Henry Jackson Hunt, who served as Chief of Artillery for the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. Abbott served principally as a military engineer during the Civil War. He was brevetted brigadier-general, United States Army, 13 March 1865.
