Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Necessity newspaper printed on pinkish brown scrap paper by Union soldiers. "First federal edition" printed on one side dated 14 July 1863. The other side is dated 15 July and is marked volume 1, no. 1. Reports on the victory at the battle at Vicksburg, the possession of Fort Hudson.
