Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes a witty letter to the business manager at Warm Springs, Georgia, where Roosevelt founded the Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation in 1927. Jokes about mosquitoes briefly. Discusses the sprinkler system for the Meriwether Hotel. Signed with initials "F.D.R." with a correction on page two. Typed on Executive Chamber stationery. Marked confidential.

Roosevelt used to visit Warm Springs to obtain the therapeutic benefits swimming in the warm spring water had on his polio paralysis.
