At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Unknown. Map: s. l., Topographical map of Virginia between Washington and Manassas Junction. No date. 1 p. Includes an image of Washington, D. C., with the capital building in the foreground. Depicts Virginia and the western corner of Maryland, including United States encampments, roads, rail lines, rivers, and other topographical features. A smaller image consists of a military map of Virginia and parts of Maryland, Ohio, Kentucky, and Delaware. The military map includes some topographical features and notes where battles took place. Kenyon, D. PDS: Buffalo, New York, [Summons to attend a meeting from Buffalo's freemasons]. 28 August 1863. 1 p. D. Kenyon signs as secretary of the Free Mason's Hall. Requests William C. Alberger, who served as Lieutenant Colonel in the 49th New York Infantry Regiment, to attend the next regular communication of Lodge of the Ancient Landmarks, No. 441, on 8 September 1863. By order of C. E. Young, W. M. Contains a Lodge of the Ancient Landmarks seal. (21 x 13.5 cm.)

Seely, Walter J. ALS: Buffalo, New York, to William C. Alberger. 2 March 1863. 1 p. Major Seely informs Alberger that he has been elected to serve as Captain of the 74th Regiment, 31st Brigade, 8th Division of the New York National Guard. Requests Alberger to transmit an official acceptance. (21 x 13.5 cm.)

Unknown. Newspaper: s.l., [Relates details of military successes of the 1st Division, 3rd Corps]. 16 May 1863. 1 p. Consists of a newspaper clipping discussing the Division's success at Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Manassas, and Fredericksburg, among other locations. States that the commanding officer will provide a list of soldiers who achieved the "Kearny Cross," the division decoration. (21.5 x 7 cm.)

Turley, Robert D. Broadside: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, [List of recruiting officers for the First Regiment of Colored Pennsylvania Volunteers]. March 1863. 1 broadside. Lists Turley and nine other recruiting officers, as well as their recruiting location in Pittsburgh. Date and "Reed from Pittsburgh, PA" written at the bottom of this document in pencil. (24.5 x 16.0 cm.)

Alberger, William C. Ephemera: Buffalo, New York, [Invitation to a military dinner]. 15 May 1863. 1 card. An invitation to officers of the 21st Regiment (possibly of the New York National Guard). States that the dinner will be served at the parlors of Dieht & Grimm on 16 May 1863. (7.2 x 11.2 cm.)

Swords, Jim. Newspaper: Vicksburg, Mississippi, The Daily Citizen. 2 July-4 July 1863. 1 p. Printed on wallpaper. Jims Swords listed as the proprietor. Reports on recent Civil War events. Contains articles on Robert E. Lee's recent success, unacceptable behavior of local soldiers, disease among Northern troops, and of the termination of printing of The National Intelligencer, a Washington, D. C. newspaper among other topics. States that this will be the final printing of the Citizen on wallpaper, due to Ulysses S. Grant's victory in Vicksburg. (50 x 31.5 cm.)
