Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Astor, his wife, Charlotte Augusta, and Cornelius Vanderbilt as the Vice President of both railroad companies. Edwin F. Carey signed as a witness. Land indenture between Astor and his wife and the Spuyten Duyvil and Port Morris Railroad Company and the New York Central and Hudson River Rail Road Company. Involves land in Westchester County, New York. With illustration of the location of the land on page 300. Stamped Book 232, Page 289-300.

Cornelius Vanderbilt II was president and chairman of the New York Central Railroad and director of 49 other railroads.
