Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his daughter, Carrie, in reply to a letter from her. Talks about his gardens at length and mentions a drought that makes "travelling on the Rail Road unbearable." Reports the birth of a grandchild named Walton Carroll. Written on printed stationery of the Georgia Adjutant General's office. Signed with initials, "Your affectionate Father J.M.K."
