Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Benton, a United States Senator from Missouri, writes to Congressmen Lytle, Hubbard, Boon, and Muhlenberg. Transmits a letter declining the nomination of the Mississippi State Convention for Vice Presidency of the United States. Remarks that the copy is for newspaper publication. Date is obscured by text loss, and is estimated based on content.

Robert Todd Lytle (1804-1839) from Ohio, Henry Hubbard (1784-1857) from New Hampshire, Ratliff Boon (1781-1844) from North Carolina, and Henry Augustus Philip Muhlenberg (1782-1844) from Pennsylvania, were all Democrats during this period and thus members of the same party as Benton.
