Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He has read Smith's "A General Idea of the College of Mirania," and compared his notes on the book with those of Richard Peters. He is enthusiastic about the book. In 1756 Smith headed the reorganization of the Franklin's College and Academy of Philadelphia into the College of Philadelphia.
