Background: Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia on 9 April 1865. In 1846 Napoleon Sarony opened a lithographic business in partnership with Henry Major. Until 1853, it was called ’Sarony and Major’. From 1857 to 1864, the company name was expanded to, ’Sarony, Major & Knapp’ but only Major and Knapp are listed on this lithograph. The company was later called the American Lithograph Co.
