Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Also signed by Sir John Trevor, Master of the Rolls and Keeper of the Seals, and Henry James, the Duke of St. Albans. Handwritten notes in pencil draw attention to the signatures. Also signed by Anthony Halford and William Beversham. In 1664 Carteret was one of the original proprietors of what is now the state of New Jersey.
