At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Harry Truman and Winston Churchill. Shows "the Big Three" at the Potsdam Conference in Germany. Includes stamp on verso.

One result of this conference was a 26 July 1945 joint proclamation by the U.S., Great Britain and China, the three main powers then fighting Japan. This "Potsdam Declaration" declared that Japan must immediately agree to unconditional surrender or face "prompt and utter destruction."
