Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Wonders if a free state candidate from Kansas has been "allowed...a seat in Congress," since "that would set Kansas matters right at once." Reports that he has "again written Mr. [William Henry] Hurlbut of Connecticut about the battle." Discusses personal affairs and asks her to send more news. Also written to his children, some of whom are with Mary.
