Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Contains a poem praising George Washington entitled "On General Washington, and his farewell letter to the United States." Includes various articles covering a broad range of topics. Appears to have been disbound from a larger volume, pages are numbered 978-1062.

John Nichols was a noted London printer, editor of the Gentleman's Magazine, biographer of William Hogarth, and historian of the court culture of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I.
