At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to thank Knox for a recent letter sent to his mother, Mrs. Palfrey, regarding money the government owes to his late father William Palfrey's estate. Thanks him for taking an interest in the case and agreeing to help them. Also takes the opportunity to ask that if Knox knows of any job openings in the government, that he help Palfrey secure a position.
