Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writing his wife about her inability to send letters, enclosing articles she asked for and knitting needles, good health of all friends and relations, arrival of militia and their poor health, capture of British frigate "Guerriere" by the USS "Constitution," travel to Carolina. This was the first significant victory of the War of 1812.
