Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Requesting a pamphlet copy of the New York State draft law. Docket states that a copy of the law was sent to Speed.

James Speed was a Kentucky State Senator, and later served as Abraham Lincoln's Attorney General.
Thomas Hillhouse was the Adjutant General of the State of New York. He also served in the New York State Senate and as the Assistant Treasurer of the United States.
