Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Concludes with "We charge upon the existing national government, that it is an insupportable despotism, wielded by a power which is superior to all legal and constitutional restraints- equally indisposed and unable to protect the lives or liberties of the people- the prop and safeguard of American Slavery." Includes a short list of anti-slavery newspapers.
