Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses Major Gates' son, comments on the law requiring giving arms to the militia, and mentions Colonel George Washington twice.

Nourse was a planter and estate owner in the Piedmont region of Virginia (now West Virginia). He served as a Berkeley County member of the Virginia House of Delegates in 1778 and was appointed commissioner to settle claims of Maryland against the United States in 1781.
