Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Image of fifteen blacks arriving in a covered wagon at a Union Army Camp. Only one of the men in the group is uniformed, and a second soldier is evident, albeit blurred, on a horse to the rear of the wagon. Inscription on verso: "Arrival of first negroes in the lines." Numeric notation on verso: "84."
