Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A printed commemorative document quoting William Anders, Jim Lovell, and Frank Borman reading a prayer and the first 8 verses of Genesis as they approached the Lunar sunrise aboard Apollo 8, 24 December 1968. Includes their portraits. Also includes a first day of issue stamp cancellation of the Apollo 8 commemorative stamp. Canceled at Houston.

Notes: The document has been given the date of the cancelled postage attached to it, 5 May 1969.
