Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Apologizes to Mrs. Dickens, the ladies, and the recipient of this letter for his late attendance the previous evening. Also apologizes for Senators John Jordan Crittenden and Alexander Barrow. Claims that he and the other Senators were held for longer than expected at a dinner at Bradley's. Refers to his actions as ungallant.

Crittenden served in Congress between 1817 and 1862, Mangum between 1823 and 1852, and Barrow between 1841 and 1846.
