I serve as the K-12 social studies curriculum coordinator/specialist for the Shawnee Mission school district. Shawnee Mission is a suburban school district in the greater Kansas City area. Prior to taking this position 7 years ago I taught American History to 7th and 8th graders for 27 years. I am on the Kansas state standards writing committee and have served as president of the Kansas Council for the Social Studies. I currently do multiple presentations on using primary sources in all types of courses. Additionally, I train teachers in the CCSS for literacy at which primary sources are key! I have completed two Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources grants and recently returned from Washington, DC where I was asked to consult on the beta version of the LOC's Teaching With Primary Sources Teacher Network. I nominated Amanda Jessee as the Gilder-Lehrman history teacher of the year and she was selected for the state of Kansas. We love Gilder-Lehrman here in Shawnee Mission.
