Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Daguerreotype showing George Lucas Hartsuff in regular US Army uniform as second artillery officer. Sothebys suggested it was probably taken shortly before he returned to West Point as an instructor in 1856. Case (not original): 12.75 x 10.3 x 2.4 cm.
