At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Account of expenses for clothing from 29 June 1699 to 18 July 1699. On the 24 July 1699 it is noted that Livingston now owes the taylor Peter [Barber] money for his clothes. At the bottom of the page is a note from 27 July [1699] to Mr. John Campbell regarding a quantity of fabric.
