Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This is a bound volume of a monthly magazine called the Analectic Magazine. Each issue contains reviews, original works, and poetry. Some issues contain domestic or foreign literary or scientific information. The first printing of the Star - Spangled Banner is found on page 433 and contains the four verses. The inside front cover of the book has a book plate with the name of Justin Turner, and a image of Lincoln Jefferson and Washington on top of a copy of the declaration. There is also the "Lawson S Watts Oct- 1842 Skip Wales No 3 Amanuensis Literature Island of Mocha Feb 1st 1843 Skip Wales of Hallowell" written on the end papers in the front of the book.
