Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs him of the return of "our Brother Capt Joseph Cashman." Says Mr. Cushing's child "the sicked child that ever I saw." News arrived from Newfoundland of the "Royal George" sinking in port, and 1,300 people dying. Around eight hundred people actually died when the ship sank in Spithead, England. Indians are reporting that the French taken three British ships of the line. Refers to Allen as his "brother."
