Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Response to Kohl's solicitation letter in which Bumpus describes his beliefs in two judgments (the white throne of judgment and the judgment of Jesus Christ) and the anti-Christ. He also describes his father's survival after a heart transplant and the remission of his own case of Chron's disease as miracles. Also contains a short biography on a copy of Missionaries of Charity letterhead and asks that the donation go to Mother Theresa. Bumpus was said to be the youngest politician ever in the United States.
