One undated photograph entitled, "Brady's Incidents of the War," taken by Mathew B. Brady. Captures New York's 17th Regiment standing in dress parade formation and holding rifle-muskets raised upward at their sides.
According to the New York State Military Museum and Veterans Research Center, the 17th Regiment was mustered into service for two years, starting from May 28, 1861. The 17th was a volunteer infantry regiment in the Union Army, under the command of Colonel Henry Seymour Lansing. Also known as the "Westchester Chasseurs," four of the regiment's companies drew from Westchester County, two from New York City, and one each from the counties of Rockland, Chenango, Wayne, and Wyoming.
