Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Schurz served as a General in the Civil War. An active member of the Republican Party throughout his lifetime, Schurz was noted (along with his wife) for his advocation of universal suffrage. After the war, Schurz worked as the Washington correspondent of the New York Tribune and served as editor of several other large newspapers. He was also Secretary of the Interior under President Rutherford Hayes. After retiring from office in 1881, Schurz returned to journalism, becoming managing editor of the New York Evening Post.
