Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written on her personal stationery, embossed with a "D," to her benefactor and friend, Sumner. Requests him to send certain government publications to her at the Government Hospital for the Insane of the Army and Navy in Washington, D.C. Among these are the 1870 census, from which Amasa Walker had been sending her information, and F. V. Hayden's Yellowstone survey.
