At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Cordelia B. Williams' claim for the National Service Life Insurance Policy taken out by her son LeRoi Shelton Williams. She began to fill it out after her sons' death but appears to not have finished or had it notarized. She details her relationship to him and lists his surviving relatives. On the back is printed penalties for insurance fraud.
