Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collateral items: print of Jefferson; a photo, "Ye Old Mint;" a print titled "The Coin Room;" a commemorative medal with the words "David Rittenhouse 1st Director U.S. Mint;" a one cent coin with a flowing hair liberty on the front and chain link on back. The first coin minted under the Coinage Act of 1792 or Mint Act, labeled "Liberty 1793;" and a half cent coin that is slightly smaller and also labeled "Liberty 1793."
