Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collection of oval portraits, mostly salt prints, all uniform size on original dark gray mounts. The images all have visible signs of water damage or other damage except for .11. Some photographs have remnants of pencil notes (.01) which has been written in ink on the front mount.
