Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written on stationery of the Murray Hill Hotel in New York.

McParlin was a surgeon in the U.S. Army from the time of the Mexican War to after the Civil War. By the end of the War, he became the Medical Director of the Army of the Potomac and was present during the siege of Petersburg.
