Burritt worked as blacksmith in Worcester, Massachusetts 1828-1839, published numerous periodicals, formed the League of Universal Brotherhood to further world peace, organized the Brussels Peace Congress of 1848, and served as U.S. consul at Birmingham, England (Library of Congress).
Edmund Fry (1811-1866) appears to have been a leading member of the Peace Society in England during the 1840s and 1850s. As a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers), Edmund Fry was a pacifist and an opponent of aggressive military action. Fry was a friend and associate of Elihu Burritt (Sussex PhotoHistory).
