Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Describes the bad weather and encounters with Indians on his march from Massachusetts to Albany, New York. Sends news of recent victories against the French and their Indian allies and says a man brought good news of the fighting in Canada. Asks to remembered to his family and friends and says "a solider Life is hard[,] hard Lodging and harty victuals."
